Course Description

We call this the accounting course for “Non Accountants”. It introduces the basic concepts of Accounting; the accounting standards governing the accounting treatment and disclosures for specific items of income, expense or assets and liabilities. The course explains concepts of income statement, balance sheet, the double entry accounting system and components of the general ledger. It also introduces the principles of IFRS 9 in relation to recognition of assets and liabilities, hedge accounting and impairment. It gives an overview of the configuration of Accounts, accounting events and accounting rules in Calypso.

The course provides a high level overview of each topic listed under each session below. It is split into three Webex Training Videos and should be taken in that order. For any queries/follow up questions on this training; please write to [email protected].

Training Video 1: Introduction to Accounting Principles and Regulatory Bodies

  1. Basic Principles of Accounting and accounting assumptions
  2. Information on Accounting Standards and Interpretations, Regulators and Resources, etc.
  3. IFRS 9 Discussion: Revamp of IAS 39
  4. Accounting Regulators- FFIEC, EBA, FRB
  5. Introduction to auditing firms: Sources of information and interpretation of Accounting Standards.
  6. Introduction to Financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement; Double Entry Accounting principle; Calypso Ledger
  7. Recognition of Assets and Liabilities (Trade-dated, settlement dated). Old IAS 39 Asset recognition.
  8. Introduction to effective yield/amortization concepts, SPPI test and financial liabilities.
  9. Introduction to Repo and Reverse Repo; TBA Dollar roll funding of MBS pool portfolio

Training Video 2: IFRS 9 Concepts and Calypso Accounting Concepts

  1. Introduction to impairment/expected credit loss model. POCI (previously originated credit impaired) concept
  2. Introduction to derivatives accounting and hedge accounting
  3. Yield calculation and EIR accrual/amortization calculations
  4. Calypso Accounting set up
  5. Introduction to Calypso liquidation concepts, TDWAC and constraints.
  6. Accounting Book, Accounting rules and Accounting events.
